German Shorthaired Pointers are one of the most energetic breeds of dog and natural hunting dogs.  They have a short thick coat and depending on the climate may shed quite a bit.  These dogs tend to have a very friendly laid back demeanor and grow attached to their human families.  Being a very energetic breed they enjoy long walks, hiking, games of fetch and are innately capable of being trained hunting dogs.  They need daily exercise and are best suited for individuals/families with active life styles.  German Shorthaired Pointers need consistent rules, calm environments and nurturing loving leadership.  If these aspects are absent they tend to not consistently listen and can be mischievous and anxious pets.  Average height and weight for males is 23-25 inches and 55-70 pounds; average height and weight for females is 21-23 inches and 45-60 pounds.  German Shorthaired Pointers tend to be a healthy breed with an average life expectancy of 12-15 years, but lines some are prone to epilepsy, hip dysplasia, hermaphrodism and lymphedema.

German Wirehaired Pointer

German Wirehaired Pointers are active and intelligent dogs.  Their wiry coats are roughly 2 inches long, water resistant/repellant and have an undercoat whose density fluctuates seasonally.  These dogs are eager to learn and very loyal to their human families.  Like the shorthaired, German Wirehaired Pointers need plenty of exercise and can become bored and hard to manage if not kept regularly active.  They need daily exercise and are best suited for individuals/families with active life styles.  Its innate hunting skills make it an excellent gun dog as it can be trained to track, point and retrieve on both land and water and also can make good watchdogs.  They too need consistent rules, calm environments and nurturing loving leadership.  If leadership is not displayed German Wirehaired Pointers can become pushy and dominating.  Average height and weight for males is 24-26 inches and 60-70 pounds; average height and weight for females is 22-24 inches and 60-70 pounds.  German Wirehaired Pointers tend to be a healthy breed with an average life expectancy of 12-14 years, but some lines are prone to hip dysplasia, ear infections, genetic eye disease and skin cancers.
